PROJECT: About the "Practice, Practice, Practice!" project

Finding motivation or inspiration to do art is one of the hardest things for me. I have all these ideas of potential pieces and projects I want to do but I can never start, finish, or continue them. And it's frustrating not being able to work on my ideas and get them in a physical format.

About a month ago, I was in South Korea on a study abroad program with my school. Being in South Korea gave me to inspiration and motivation to start doing art again. I remember the first day I was in Seoul, I was walking around the city by myself when I noticed all the beautiful artwork they have. There were statues, sculptures, temples, store fronts, store designs, and pretty logos everywhere. Seeing these things up and allover the city was truly magnificent.

One of my favorite sculptures around Seoul.

As the month went on, we had a couple site visits to Korean companies and one of the things I noticed about the companies we visited was their use of creativity and innovation in a business environment. As a business major and someone who loves being creative, I really enjoyed seeing how creativity can be incorporated in a serious business environment.

I wrote about this in my Busan post, but one the places we visited was the Gamcheon Cultural Village which was a beautiful village filled with artwork and colors. This was another factor in my inspiration to continue drawing and doing art. I loved seeing how art played a big role in the village and how art turned this once poor area into a popular tourist attraction.

The beautiful village

On Jeju Island, we visited a gallery of a photographer who was known to dedicating his life to his work. The gallery was called Kim Young Gap Gallery.  Kim Young Gap is a photographer that spent his life capturing the beautiful scenery of Jeju Island. His photo made Jeju Island look like a completely different place. It was amazing to see how he was able to capture the beautiful island in a way that many may not see the island as. As he got older, he suffered from Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) which caused some setbacks in his photography and being able to go out. However, that didn't stop him. He was determined to build his gallery to show people his art and the beauty of Jeju. Walking around the gallery, I was able to see his passion through his photos and the gallery itself. Witnessing this passion was truly inspirational because he didn't let anything stop him from doing what he loved. Money, hunger, weather, or the disease wasn't able to keep him doing what he loved. This is truly amazing to me because it showed how much he loved his craft and how important it was for him.

Overall, my month in South Korea has re-opened my eyes to the art world and gave me the inspiration to start new art projects. This project I'm about to start is called "Practice, Practice, Practice!" which is essentially a project to give me more practice in drawing. However, from my experience in the past, I tend to give up on projects easily, so this time around, I gave myself some rules.

Rules:

  1. Each week, focus on a topic that occurred that week. For example, during the week, it was mainly studying and school. I could do a drawing based on that.
  2. Time limit - each drawing has to be done within a time limit. I'm thinking of giving myself a 4 hour time limit (which is long but that's to include my distraction time because I tend to get distracted when I start drawing).
  3. After each drawing, I have to post on Instagram and make a blog post about (even if I end up hating the piece).
  4. Have fun - don't make it seem like a burden or a assignment. This is suppose to be a happy project to get me to develop my art, get better, and explore different styles.
  5. End of project: December 31, 2017

The point of this project is to help me grow as an artist: to help me become better at drawing, finding my style, finding what types of drawings I like best, learn how to stick to a project, explore different art styles, and just getting some good practice.

I will be making a blog post each week for the drawing I did for this project. It will be labeled as "PROJECT: Practice, Practice, Practice! Week #". Be on a lookout for my posts.

I will have a page with all the links of my blog post for it to easily be found. The page will be labeled as "Practice Project" and you can find it on the menu bar.

Until next time,

Nancyyy
